Less memorization, more improvisation, more checkmates, more fun!  Let’s think how to get there.

WHY

PROBLEMS WITH CHESS

The optimum strategy for chess players-  just like in other sports- should be genuinely attempting to win, to score a full point in each game. Instead of safe “draw in the pocket, let us save energy for the next game” approach.

The sportive aspect of chess is underemphasized as a consequence of orthodox laws of the game.

Yet, professional players are not to blame, they are entitled to do what works for them. Limitation of draw agreements by move 30 or similar is not a solution.

It is the game’s regulations, rulebooks that should be changed. At the same time keeping the millennia old feel of the game.

WHAT

SPORTS CHESS

In Sports Chess scoring is shared unequally, if game drawn.

Very importantly, instead of random first move advantage assignment and identical game time allocation:  time-bids procedure by opponents before a game decides both- pieces’ color and unequal time allotment.

By virtue of these basic Sports Chess rules- every game produces a winner and element of luck is replaced by a strategic pre-game decision.

Sports Chess comparison to culture chess is in a way analogous to American football compared to rugby.

Both great games, true, and the latter has a lot of history and tradition. But, inevitably, the former is just somehow more exciting, dynamic, spectacular..  The main difference is regulations. We believe in improving, polishing and updating the rulesets employed in Sports Chess matches and tournaments regularly- as often as fans demand it.

Culture chess is a solitary game.
It is more fun to win as a team, in collaboration!  And less heart-wrenching to lose..

WHAT GRANDMASTERS SAY

ABOUT SPORTS CHESS

GM Ņikita Meškovs

It was not difficult initially to understand the rules, they are very logical. But, one needs a bit of time to adjust. Overall, I really like the new format and strongly support it, the play is more inspired and dynamic. I hope Sports Chess has a bright future.

GM Arturs Neikšāns

Substantially, the first strategic decision happens already before the first move: what color to choose, what time selection to bid. A very interesting experiment, no doubt, should be continued. Games have unexpected twists and turns and attacking has higher chance of success. I foresee admirable prospects for Sports Chess game in the future.

GM Igors Kovaļenko

My evaluation of Sports Chess after the first tournament is positive. In particular, the new pawn move options are excellent for buoyant gameplay. I see this a perspective development. Persists what changes and people rightfully prefer more entertaining and competitive chess. I would definitely like to participate and play this format again in the next Sports Chess tournament.
